Keep Your Axe Sharpened

I ran across this short story today which was written by Stephen Covey and it just really hits home on so many different points when it comes to having success in Network Marketing, Home based business and just in general as an entrepreneur, that I felt compelled to share it with you today:

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees

“Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”

Very motivated by the boss’ words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked.

“Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees…”

The moral of this story is that sometimes, it’s not about how hard you work that makes the difference. It’s about how “smart” you work. Also, when it comes to growing your business, it’s about keeping your “tools” sharp. And in our industry, our “tools” are our skill set. Now different people have different ideas about what skill set is important when growing a business. But for me personally (and I know I speak for the rest of my partners in iGlobal Pros), the number 1 money making skill set is – MARKETING. If you don’t keep your Marketing skills sharp, it is very unlikely that you will have ANY success or lasting wealth in this industry.

It’s also important to not get too caught up with just “trying” to be busy. If you’re being busy doing non-productive activities, how is that going to help you move forward in your business? I see this happen time and time again and it’s just a matter of getting organized and spending more time on “income generating” activities and less time on things that won’t really increase your bottom line.

I’ve spoken about income generating activities quite a lot. But for those of you who don’t know, they are basically activities that make you the most money. Things like marketing, speaking to customers on the phone and anything else that has a direct impact on your bottom line. Sending unproductive emails or taking 5 hours to record one video don’t count. 😉

Lastly, just because you have been “cutting trees” for years does not mean that you cut trees well. You may have been “cutting trees” the wrong way for years and have picked up many bad habits along the way. So be prepared to take a good look at yourself and remember that there is always room for improvement.

So, spend more time on sharpening your skill set. This is the number one thing that we focus on and make sure that every single member on our team does the same. The greater your skill set, the more money you will earn. And when you focus on education and your skill set it teaches you a life long skills that once learned, can be applied over and over again no matter what industry or business you’re in.

It’s like the phrase…

“Give someone a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach someone to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime”.

Something to think about…
